Welcome

Let me start things this month by saying congratulations to Vanessa Kendell on the birth of her son! Let the celebrations begin… And what a month it is to celebrate. May has so many exciting things coming into season I almost don’t know where to start. Vanessa, bless her for finding the time, has rustled up some great ideas for all you vegetarians out there, take a look at page 63 for her wonderfully tasty ideas.
My grandfather and father were butchers, so meat has always played a huge part of our daily meals with both of them not really understanding why people don’t eat meat; now I would never tell them this in person, but to be honest I also enjoy the occasional meat-free meal, although I hasten to add I’m not in any way a vegetarian. And so, this month I have thoroughly enjoyed sampling many of these fresh-tasting recipes, as have my family and friends.
If you think this issue has more vegetarian dishes in than normal, you are not mistaken as this month we also celebrate the National Vegetarian Week (May 19th-25th); turn to page 63 for some great ways of adding vegetables to your recipe book. And if those ideas don’t whet your appetite, take a look at the suggestions Wendy Riddell has conjured up for vegetable-only dishes.
May is also a month of bank holidays and festivals and none more so than the Watercress Festival which takes place in the beautiful Georgian town of Arlesford, Hampshire on May 11th. To celebrate this occasion we’ve got some mouth-watering suggestions for adding this great peppery herb to your meals, starting on page 28.
Clarissa Porter has also been in celebratory mood as she trawled her extensive recipe collection for some great meals to prepare and cook up for one (or both) of the Bank Holidays this month.
Have a great time, there’s plenty to do and cook.
